A brief history of the Order
The Order of Mechanics became universal in the year eighteen seventy-seven (1877) and received its authority from the British Parliament.
In November 1906 the Independent Order of Mechanics Preston Unity Inc. (I.O.M.P.U.) was established, Lodges were setup in the islands of Grenada, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Aruba, and the following countries: England,
The Netherlands, Guyana and Suriname.

The aim of our noble institution:
We instill in our members the virtues of Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude, Justice and never to lose sight of Faith, hope and charity. We also instill upon them, to know themselves so that they may know God, who lives within us all. To form our members into leaders, into better persons and contributors to the society, respect and tolerance. By practicing self-improvement, and making a positive impact on each other, our families, and our communities. Our doors are open to adults from all walks of life with these aims.
Our presence in the society:
We contribute to various charitable organizations such as Orphanages, Shelters and Churches to name but a few. Our charge is to give alms to the poor and weary pilgrims, succor the needy, feed the hungry, cloth the naked, bind up the wounds of the afflicted and take care of the widows and orphans of our brethren. Our Order is built up of various nationalities. We regard no one for their wealth, external qualifications, race, class, or creed, but for their internal or spiritual qualifications.
